What Does it Mean When Children Are Out Of School

When children are out of school, they run the risk of being recruited into warring parties (citation) or sexually abused. Their career aspirations, ambitions, and the joy they feel from learning no longer have a place to reside. When conflicting parties use schools and other educational facilities as barracks, hideouts, or recruiting grounds, they deprive children of their right to education and expose them to the damaging effects of war (Safe Schools Declaration, 2015). Studies also show that the longer a child is away from school, the lower the rate of their return to school, this would mean that several Tigrayan children would have missed their opportunity to empower themselves. As a result, we must work together to protect education from attack in Northern Ethiopia. As King (2005) notes, education alone may not resolve the Tigray conflict, but it will certainly reduce the chances of young learners being killed or recruited by armed forces (Bush & Saltarelli, 2001). It will also guarantee them their right to education as enshrined in the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child (EiE, n.d.), bring peace (Novelli, 2017), and stimulate economic growth within the country.
