The notion of Education in Emergencies, by nature, needs to consider the safety and wellbeing of students, teachers, and volunteers. This guarantee is the backbone of education initiatives in conflict-affected areas and displaced populations. EIE organizations need to ensure all involved parties will be provided a level of safety comparable or better than the ones currently available. Different education organizations use specified methods and strategies to ensure that they can safely accommodate everyone in their organizations. As conflicts worldwide become more violent and complex, there needs to be more focus on school safety. There were 11,000 attacks on education between 2015-2019, injuring 22,000 students. We need to work to increase school security and decrease the number of attacks and victims.
This project is a work-study intended to briefly explore the different methods that INEE organizations adopt to ensure that their particular programs are safe for all personnel, focusing specifically on keeping physical schools, students, and school personnel safe. It will focus on the INEE, USAID, and the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack (GCPEA) as the prominent organizations for this study. They will discuss keeping education safe in conflict-affected areas and schools operating under COVID-19. These organizations will have their dedicated pages, and the project will conclude with recommendations that consolidate aspects from all three organizations.
