Marketing a Curative Climate in Cook's Guide

Temperature in Algeria and Tunisia

Cook's Practical Guide claimed Algeria to be one of the most pleasent places a tourist could visit and heralded the “superiority of Algiers" over other tourist destinations "[in] the evenness of its temperature” (4). Temperatures are listed from other prominant tourist destinations, both in Europe (London, Paris, Naples) and abroad (Cario). The inclusion of data and statistics on Algerian climate lent credibility to Cook’s promotion of the regions.

Monthly average temperatures furthered Cook's claim that the Algerian temperature was consistent year-round and therefore suited well to tourists seeking an escape from harsh climates in Europe. Referencing the work of French physician Dr. Gandil, Cook’s Practical Guide states that “no endemic diseases are prevalent in Algeria… [it is] appropriate to invalids” (5).
